When a commercial fridge, freezer or cold room stops working, you have limited time to protect your stock. Act in this order.
In the first few minutes
- Keep the doors shut. Every opening lets cold air out.
- Check the temperature. Use a probe thermometer and write down the reading and the time.
- Check the basics. Look at the power supply, the plug, the fuse and the thermostat.
- Call your engineer. Get a repair time, even if it is only an estimate.
Know the temperatures
Chilled food must be kept at 8°C or below in the UK. The Food Standards Agency recommends 5°C or below. Frozen food is normally stored at -18°C or colder.
Our food safety guide covers the figures in more detail.
When to hire a trailer
A trailer makes sense if the repair will take more than a few hours, or if you cannot move stock to another cold store. It gives you chilled or frozen storage on your own site.
What to tell us when you call
- Your postcode and how a trailer could reach your site
- Whether you need chilled or frozen storage
- Roughly how much stock you need to protect
- How long you expect to need it
Our team delivers the trailer and sets it up. It is our policy that the hirer does not move or tow it. We collect it when you no longer need it.
Check your insurance
Some business insurance policies cover stock lost to equipment failure, and some require you to take reasonable steps to protect it. Check your policy and keep your temperature records.
